“Do you want answers? “I want the truth!” Troy! Kotsur! I love it. Maybe my favorite oscar this year is Troy Kotsur, the deaf actor of the marvelous (winner of the best film) CODA. Along with winning Best Supporting Actor at the 2022 Oscars, he also won a BAFTA Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award this year for his role as the lovable villain, fisherman father. As part of his promotional tour, Kotsur stopped by Variety’s offices for an interview. There, they asked him to record a fun video “reinterpreting” iconic movie scenes. He faces Vito Corleone from The GodfatherBenjamin of The graduationBrody’s Jaws (it’s the best), and Darth Vader from star wars. It’s fun to watch, even if it feels a little awkward because he’s just wrapped up in these scenes and hasn’t had time to prepare. Variety also posted a very short interview with Kotsur after his big win – both of these videos can be seen below.

Thanks to Variety for publishing these two articles. Original Description: “Tory Kotsur performs our favorite scenes from The Godfather, star wars, Jaws, The graduationand even has some advice for women in business.” He is also featured in a cover story for the industry magazine – read it here. He is the first deaf actor to win a BAFTA award, and the first deaf man and second deaf performer to win an Oscar (his CODA her costar Marlee Matlin was the first deaf actress to win an Oscar for Children of a lesser God in 1986). Kotsur also directed the feature film No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie in 2013. He says all that attention has changed him. “Now to receive these awards – it saved my life, my career, my family. I took so many risks, and without these nominations and awards, I don’t know what would have happened.” Movie magic! I’m so glad he won and hopefully we can see him in other movies soon.
