San Antonio’s popular free-to-air movie series kicked off its season with a family favorite, Encanto. Mission Marquee Plazaformerly known as the Mission Drive-In Theater, began its movie season at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 7 in the South San Antonio neighborhood.

Film screenings are shown through November on a giant screen three times a month with animated, live-action and returning films. During the free event, there will also be entertainment, food trucks and live performances.

Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks to enjoy during the films. The screenings begin shortly after dusk.

The Mission Drive-In Theater opened in 1948 but closed in 2000. In 2013, the city restored and remodeled the space to host outdoor movie events. Today, Mission Marquee Plaza, with its large stage and screen, serves as a meeting place for the community to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities throughout the year, including festivals, film screenings, artistic and cultural events, outdoor markets, etc.
