Olivia Wilde’s film “Don’t Worry Darling”: plot, cast, date, news

Since you’ve had a few months to digest the fact that Harry Styles is no longer your boyfriend and, in fact, he’s actually Olivia Wilde’s boyfriend, are you emotionally strong enough to discuss the movie where everything happened? Because it would be the most awaited Don’t worry darling, a psychological thriller set in a desert town (maybe Palm Springs?) in 1950s California.

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming movie, including details about the casting (someone’s been fired already, yuck), the plot, Olivia’s directing style, and my personal speculation on release date. There is no official trailer yet, but there is a very short teaser video that you can enjoy.

We know the release date

As well as blessing our timelines with this trailer, we got the movie’s official release date: September 23, 2022. Obviously, that means we’ll have to wait a whole year for this movie to hit our screens. It’s a big disappointment, but I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

We have our first look at Florence Pugh in costume

Okay, yeah, there were paparazzi photos of the cast in costume, but Olivia posted this photo of Florence in character.

I repeat: Olivia Wilde is the director

Even if Don’t worry darling is only Olivia’s second realization projectshe made her directorial debut in 2019 with the hit and critically acclaimed teenage comedy Booksmart—she’s already established herself as a badass force to be reckoned with behind the camera. Famously, she fired Shia LaBeouf from this project, citing her “no-asshole policy,” a way of thinking she developed in Variety‘s Director on the Director series:

“Someone, who is a very established actor and director in this industry, gave me some really bad advice that was helpful to me because I just knew I had to do the opposite. They said, ‘Listen, the way to get respect on a set, you’ve got to have three arguments a day. Three great arguments that restore your power, remind all in charge, be the predator. It is the opposite of my approach. And I don’t want any of that.

Lucky for everyone involved Don’t worry darling, Olivia is committed to preventing toxic attitudes from the set and to cultivating a community of united creatives. Get this: she apparently swore by group hugs with the Booksmart crew. Aww.

The cast is so! Slim! Good!

To name a few A-listers, the cast includes Florence Pugh (who stole our hearts with her Oscar-nominated performance in Little woman), Star Trek‘s Chris Pine, and crazy rich asiansGemma Chan. Don’t worry darling probably been put on your radar in early September 2020, when Deadline reported that Harry landed the lead role, replacing Shia. At the time, Shia’s departure was due to scheduling conflicts, but Variety confirmed later that Olivia showed him the door after learning that FKA Twigs, Shia’s ex, had filed a complaint against him for “incessant” abuse.

The specific details around the roles of each are still a bit unclear, but according to Collider, Florence plays an “unhappy housewife”, Harry plays her “perfect husband”, Chris maaaybe plays some sort of cult leader, and Olivia herself plays a supporting character. KiKi Layne, of If Beale Street could speak, replaced Dakota Johnson, who had to leave the cast due to scheduling issues.

While we don’t know exactly when Olivia and Harry first started romancing, we do know that she was very excited about her casting. At Harry iconic Vogue cover maintenance, Olivia admitted that she “did a little victory dance when we found out we officially have Harry in the movie.” And she didn’t stop there, she got mad about Harry, saying Vogue:

“To me he’s very modern, and I hope that that mark of confidence as a man that Harry has – truly devoid of any hint of toxic masculinity – is indicative of his generation and therefore of the future of the world.” . I think he’s in many ways the champion of that, the spearhead. It’s quite powerful and quite extraordinary to see someone in their position redefine what it can mean to be a man with confidence.

Despite all this enthusiasm, Harry and Olivia apparently kept things professional while working together on set. In case you aren’t already in the throes of a fit of jealous rage, please direct your eyes to this Instagram:

Let me copy and paste the caption causing fainting for easy reading:

“Little known fact: Most male actors don’t want to play supporting roles in movies directed by women. The industry has led them to believe that it diminishes their power (i.e. their financial worth) to take on these roles, which is one of the reasons it is so difficult to get funding. for films emphasizing female stories. No kidding, it’s hard to find actors who understand why it might be worth allowing a woman to take center stage. Enter: @Harry Styles, our “Jack”. Not only did he relish the opportunity to allow the brilliant @FlorencePugh to take center stage as our ‘Alice’, but he infused every scene with a nuanced sense of humanity. He didn’t have to join our circus, but he jumped aboard with humility and grace and blew us away every day with his talent, warmth and ability to back down. ?? #DontWorryDarling

So, yes, everyone has a crush on Harry Styles, it’s moving forward!

Positive COVID-19 test put production (temporarily) on hiatus

Let’s not forget that we are still living in a global pandemic, and even glamorous Hollywood is not immune. Don’t worry darling began production in early fall 2020, but filming came to a halt almost immediately when a production member tested positive for COVID-19 in November. According to Deadline, the New Line studio confirmed that everyone on set went into isolation immediately and that filming resumed after a 14-day hiatus, the recommended quarantine time.

Let’s discuss the plot, because it looks juicy

Here’s what we know, according to a statement: “A 1950s housewife (Florence) living with her husband (Harry) in a utopian experimental community begins to fear that her glamorous society is hiding troubling secrets.” Olivia describe the film as “very high and opulent” and “incredibly stylistic”. It sounds perfectly paranoid, I love it.

Filming is already over

Florence announced this when she posted the Insta above on February 14, writing: “It’s official, it’s over! Yesterday was our last day on the set of Don’t worry darling. Olivia did the same, sharing a sweet backstage photo and praising Florence in the caption: ‘For working with such a talented and courageous actor as @FlorencePugh is every director’s dream. I will be eternally grateful to you, Flo. It has been an honor to be your captain. I can’t wait for the world to see the amazing work you put into this movie.
